The course teaches the practice of meditation and the practical application of mindfulness in daily life. Empower yourself to integrate the four key areas and skills of mindfulness – attention, values, wisdom and an open heart – into your life in practical, accessible and universal ways.

Attention – Developing attention skills through meditation training, cultivating the skill of attending to what we choose to, and becoming aware of our attention

Values – Discovering what’s meaningful and important to us so that we bear these in mind. Exploring the relationship between values and genuine happiness. 

Wisdom –Learning to see clearly, becoming more aware of our perceptions and judgments, and developing skillfulness with ourselves and others in the area of emotions, communication and more. 

Open Heart – Developing healthy and beneficial attitudes and interactions through cultivating skills of compassion, loving-kindness, empathic joy and equanimity.

Mindfulness in Recovery® (MIR) is a skills-based, accessible and comprehensive mindfulness program designed specifically for recovery. It supports all recovery pathways using an individualized, mindfulness curriculum that empowers the client to integrate it with their personal values, cultural background, and spiritual beliefs. Using the language of recovery in the curriculum to build connections to recovery communities and literature, the MIR principles can be integrated seamlessly with your current treatment modalities providing clients with the skills to put the therapeutic tools you are offering them into practice.

Program Overview

2 – two-day residential workshops – to begin and end the four-month training

Opening Workshop:

September 27-30, 2019 – Mercy Retreat Center in Auburn, California:

  • Arrive Friday evening, September 27th and leave Monday morning, September 30th

Concluding Workshop: 

January 30 – February 1, 2020 – Mindful Life Program, Carbondale, Colorado:

  • Arrive Thursday evening, January 30th and finish Saturday evening, February 1st. 

Monthly Online Classes:

Once a month on the 4th Monday at 6 pm Mountain Time

  • Monday, October 28th
  • Monday, November 25th
  • Monday, December 23rd

Additional Meetings:

  • Weekly peer calls with assigned cohort members on phone or via web conferencing. Scheduled by members.
  • Monthly individual supervision phone meeting. Additional meetings can be scheduled upon request and subject to availability.

Making Mindfulness Meaningful: Establishing Traits that Support Long-Term Recovery

Join us at the Third Street Center in Carbondale, Colorado for this insightful and pragmatic mindfulness training with John Bruna and Mary Mike Haley. Participants will receive a certificate for 3 hours of professional development and all proceeds will be donated to A Way Out to support all of the good work they are providing to our community. This training is open to the whole community. You do not need to be a therapist to benefit from it. 

Cost: By donation (any amount). We will collect donations to A Way Out at the event. You can register below, space is limited. 

About the training: All too often, mindfulness is watered down to simple practices and exercises to become more present in the moment and more aware of one’s bodily sensations. While these practices are valuable and can provide some temporary release from stress and rumination, often they are isolated from how we live our lives and other therapeutic processes and healthy habits that promote well-being. Developing the skills of living mindfully empowers you and/or your clients to develop long-term traits that allow them to integrate them into daily life in a practical and sustainable way. 

About the Trainers

John Bruna

Mary Mike Haley

John Bruna is the co-founder of the Mindful Life Program™ and of Mindfulness in Recovery®. John has been in continuous recovery since 1984, had successful careers in addiction treatment and as an educator prior to spending over six years as an ordained Buddhist monastic. Drawing from his extensive training and personal experiences over three decades, John has become a leading voice in the field of mindfulness, authoring The Wisdom of a Meaningful Life: The Essence of Mindfulness and The Essential Guidebook to Mindfulness in Recovery, as well as presenting at TEDx and conferences throughout the country. John is for his warmth, humor, and ability to make teachings practical and accessible. 

John will be presenting at the A Way Out Symposium in September and at NCAD West in October. 

Mary Michael Haley, MA, LAC, RPT, CSAT – Mary Mike is the clinical director of Aspire Recovery for Women. She has been in private practice as a psychotherapist for over twenty years, specializing in family issues, addiction counseling, and post-traumatic stress. For Fourteen years Mary Mike was a senior lecturer of Sociology at Western State Colorado University. She is also the co-founder of Living Journeys, a non-profit organization helping individuals and families living with cancer in the Gunnison Valley.

Mary Mike will be presenting at Compassion Fest in August. 

Training Outcomes:

  • Knowledge of the diverse perspectives and definitions of mindfulness
  • Clarify the difference between mindfulness meditation and the practice of mindfulness
  • Understand the role of meditation in the practice of mindfulness
  • Clarify the difference between practices that develop a trait and those that produce a state
